All across the globe, nearly 1.5 billion children and youth have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic crisis. For the younger population this directly affects their opportunity to study and learn. Education still has to be succoured.
Whilst strides were already being made to bring digitization to the education sector, the pandemic has amplified the need to do so swiftly, seamlessly and all encompassing.
Digital learning has emerged as an indispensable resource for education in this lockdown scenario. Digital technology is providing all sorts of remote learning opportunities for students across the globe and enabling teachers to create intriguing virtual experiences.
Schools and universities are leveraging existing platforms like Google classroom, Microsoft Education and conferencing apps like Zoom. Students are engaging with various resources online. All this is receiving significant push from governments across the world. For example, France has created an online portal “Ma classe à la maison” (My class at home) providing access to educational content and learning opportunities. Students with computer or mobile phones can access four weeks of courses on the portal. China launched an initiative entitled “Ensuring learning undisrupted when classes are disrupted.” allowing 50 million students and teachers to connect simultaneously, enabling them to access primary and secondary education modules, as well as life skills content relevant to a health emergency. Further, Saudi Arabia is utilizing TV and social media to broadcast lessons for all grades and have designated 127 supervisors and teachers to deliver daily lessons in 112 educational subjects through 19 TV channels. the US Department of Education (DOE) has taken measures to mitigate the hindering factors by creating a National Education Technology Plan. This comprehensive roadmap is designed to provide high-quality learning experiences to students across the country using technology
